Achievements

2010 has been an intense year so far – not only for charities such as The Fred Hollows Foundation, which have been hit hard by the global financial crisis – but also for myself. I put all my efforts into getting fit and to learn how to guide visually impaired runners.

In 2009, I had trained hard for The North Face 100 in the Blue Mountains, and I was very happy to not only have finished one of the most demanding 100-km races in the world in 16.5 hours, but also to have met and run with Dean 'Karno' Karnazes, the ultimate Ultramarathon Man.

The winter months then saw me preparing for the 2009 World Masters Gamesin Sydney. I needed to change my training approach, so I halved my kilometres from 70+ to 30+ per week, and I concentrated on much shorter races. My plan worked well and I am glad to have succeeded in the Games, finishing both the 10 km and the half marathon in excellent times. Needless to say, my results were of course nowhere close enough to win a medal against all these fit 'oldies'. It is certain that I will have to keep running for another 35 years before I may get a chance to win a gold medal!
